The effect of point-of- care ultrasonography on emergency department length of stay and CT utilization in children with suspected appendicitis

چکیده
Background The role of clinician-performed ultrasonography for suspected appendicitis is controversial. Published data conclude that ultrasonography has high specificity to rule in the diagnosis of appendicitis with variable sensitivity to rule it out. Newer data suggest that point-of-care ultrasonography (PoCUS) may have similar test characteristics. This is the first study to examine the effect of point-of-care ultrasonography on emergency department (ED) length of stay (LOS) and CT utilization in children with suspected appendicitis.

Implementation of Electronic Clinical Decision Support for Pediatric Appendicitis.
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Computed tomography (CT) and ultrasound (US) are commonly used in patients with acute abdominal pain. We sought to standardize care and reduce CT use while maintaining patient safety through implementation of a multicomponent electronic clinical decision support tool for pediatric patients with possible appendicitis. METHODS We conducted a quasi-experimental study of ...
متن کاملAccuracy of ultrasonography in diagnosing acute appendicitis during pregnancy based on surgical findings
Background: Acute appendicitis is the most common nonobstetric surgical problem in pregnancy. Common signs and symptoms of appendicitis are less reliable during pregnancy due to physiological changes; thus, the role of imaging becomes prominent. Thus, in the present study, we aimed at assessing the accuracy of sonography in diagnosing acute appendicitis during pregnancy. Methods: ...
متن کاملFAST and abnormal urinalysis: the effective screening tools in pediatric abdominal trauma
Objective: The present study examines the diagnostic accuracy of abdominal ultrasonography and urinalysis test in children with blunt abdominal trauma, compared with CT scan. The aim of this study was to compare the diagnostic value of ultrasound and urinalysis test with CT scan as a golden standard diagnostic method in predicting abdominal peritoneal injury in these patients. Methods: Thi...
متن کاملEffect of Ondansetron on the Incidence of Ketamine Associated Vomiting in Procedural Sedation and Analgesia in Children: A Double-Blind, Randomized, Placebo-Controlled Trial
Background Vomiting is a common side effect of ketamine in children's sedation and there is still controversy about the use of an anti-emetic drug along with ketamine to reduce this complication. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of ondansetron in controlling vomiting induced by intramuscular (IM), and intravenous (IV) ketamine for procedural sedation and analgesia in chil...
متن کاملDiagnosis of appendicitis by bedside ultrasound in the ED.
BACKGROUND Computed tomography (CT) has largely become standard of care for diagnosing appendicitis at the expense of increased patient radiation exposure, cost, and time to surgical intervention. To date, there are very limited data on the accuracy of bedside ultrasound (BUS) for the diagnosis of appendicitis in adults. OBJECTIVE The objective of this study is to evaluate test characteristic...
